The Korean alphabet or hangul is the native Korean alphabet (in contrast to the hanja, or Chinese characters). Each hangul syllable block consists of one of 24 phonemes (jamo): 14 consonants and 10 vowels. Historically, it had 3 consonants and one more vowel.
These syllable blocks can be written either horizontally, from left to right, or vertically, from top to bottom, with the columns arranged from right to left.
Hangul was introduced in the fall of 1446 by decree of King Sejong. It is celebrated on October 9 in South Korea and January 15 in North Korea.
