Doctors' Day was initiated by the Government of India in 1991 on the birth and death anniversary of the renowned and legend physician of India, Dr Bidhan Chandra Roy. Dr Roy was born on July 1, 1882, and also died on the July 1, 1962, just on same date 80 years later. In 1961, he was awarded the Bharat Ratna. The Bharat Ratna is the highest civilian award of the Republic of India. Instituted on 2 January 1954, the award is conferred in recognition of "exceptional service/performance of the highest order", without distinction of race, occupation, position, or sex.
The first day of the month of July is celebrated as National Doctor’s Day in India to acknowledge the contributions of millions of doctors for their relentless effort to provide best care to patients, beating all odds on many fronts in life. On the day, nation pays rich tribute to doctors, who considers saving life of a patient as single point goal. Their contribution to create a hale and hearty society is unfathomable.
