The veneration by the Monégasques of this Roman legionary, who suffered martyrdom on 9th August 258 in the reign of the Emperor Valerian, goes back to the sixteenth century when a relic of Saint Roman was entrusted to the Terrazzani family who had a chapel built in which to lay it.
St. Roman is one of Monaco’s Saint Patrons. The high point of the celebrations takes place on August 9th, the actual Feast Day of St. Roman, around the Altar that is consecrated to the Saint in Monaco’s Cathedral.
The martyr Saint Roman’s feast day is celebrated with a mass and a morning concert, ending with a feast which includes the Monaco speciality Barbajuans, a type of deep-fried ravioli stuffed with chard and cheese.
