15 August - Ferragosto in Italy
Ferragosto is a feast of ancient Roman origin, now celebrated in Italy on August 15th.
The day of August is traditionally dedicated to trips out of town, packed lunches and, given the seasonal heat, to refreshing baths in marine, river or lake waters. The exodus to mountain or hilly locations in search of refreshment is also widespread.
In the 7th century the Catholic Church moved the celebrations from 1st to 15th August, converting it into a religious celebration dedicated to the Assumption of Mary: that day marked the death and rebirth of the Virgin, who was welcomed into heaven, both with soul and with the body.
