3 September - Merchant Navy Remembrance Day in Canada
Because of the huge importance of the merchant fleet to both World Wars, it has its own day of remembrance and commemoration.
Canadians recognize Remembrance Day, originally called Armistice Day, every 11 November at 11 a.m. It marks the end of hostilities during the First World War and an opportunity to recall all those who have served in the nation's defence. In 1994, National Aboriginal Veterans Day was inaugurated to recognise the contribution of Aboriginal soldiers. In 2001, Merchant Navy Remembrance Day was created by the Canadian parliament, designating 3 September as a day to recognise the contributions and sacrifice of Canadian merchant mariners.
After the war, Canadian Merchant Navy veterans were denied veterans benefits and official recognition for decades. This was not corrected until the 1990s and many individual cases remain unresolved.
Representatives of the Merchant Navy also take part in parades, services, and ceremonies up and down the country during November. They have a presence at Remembrance Sunday ceremonies in London too, marching alongside their military compatriots.
