10 September - Amerindian Heritage Day in Guyana
American Indians here are credited with the invention of the canoe, as well as dishes based on cassava and Guyanese peppers, Guyana's national dish.
The Indigenous Peoples of Guyana, Indigenous Guyanese or Indians of Guyana, are Guyanese of indigenous descent. They make up approximately 9.16% of Guyana's population. Amerindian Heritage Month is an annual celebration held every September in Guyana to honor the indigenous peoples of Guyana. American Indian Heritage Month in September traditionally attracts more local and international interest and attention as more and more Guyanese learn about the contributions of indigenous peoples to the arts and development.
For example, $90.5 million was allocated to the 2017 Heritage Celebration, which aimed to affirm and preserve Indigenous customs, language and traditions by showcasing American Indian works, literature and art.
