2 January - Ancestry Day
Ancestry Day is a public holiday in Haiti celebrated on January 2. This day is dedicated to honour the memory of Haiti's founders and those who gave their lives in the struggle for independence in the early 19th century.
Haiti was “discovered” by Christopher Columbus in 1492, is the most mountainous country in the Caribbean. Haiti was the first country in the Western Hemisphere to abolish slavery. Prior to gaining its independence in 1804, Haiti was the French colony of Saint-Domingue. Under French rule, Saint-Domingue grew to be the wealthiest colony in the French empire and, perhaps, the richest colony in the world.
