26 September - Dominion Day
In medieval times, a dominion was a country that was independent but controlled by the British Empire. Dominions existed in the period before 1939. The dominions were all equal in status and were autonomous communities.
In the Dominion of New Zealand, the anniversary of the granting of Dominion status, on 26 September, was observed as Dominion Day; it was never a public holiday.
New Zealand became a separate British Crown colony in 1841 and received responsible government with the Constitution Act in 1852. New Zealand chose not to take part in the Federation of Australia and became the Dominion of New Zealand on 26 September 1907, Dominion Day, by proclamation of King Edward VII.
