Sao Tome and Principe is an African country made up of several islands located in the Gulf of Guinea, specifically northwest of the coast of Gabon, very close to the equator and is located near the Equatorial Guinea Exclusive Economic Zone. It is one of the microstates that exist in Africa.
In 1990, Sao Tome became one of the first African countries to join the democratic reform, and changes to the constitution - the legalization of opposition political parties - led to the 1991 elections, which were peaceful, free and transparent.
The land reform project, initiated in 1993, aimed to transform the plantation economy into an agricultural structure dominated by small farmers, mostly former roca workers.
