27 January - Devota in Monaco
January 27 is a special day in the Principality. Every year on this date, Monaco celebrates Saint Devote, the Patron Saint of Monaco. For 48 hours, on January 26 and 27, the inhabitants of the Principality participate in celebrations in memory of this martyr, originally from Lucciana in Corsica.
Celebrated since then by all Monegasques, the representation of Saint Devote is present in each church of the Principality as well as on coins. It is said that she is "the protective soul of the Monegasque identity". Mass, procession and ceremony of the Blessed Sacrament in the Church of Sainte-Dévote, are notably organized in her memory during two days.
A boat is even symbolically set ablaze in the presence of the Princely Family, before a firework display lights up the Principality's sky. On this 27th of January, AS Monaco wishes an excellent Saint Dévote to all Monegasques, and in particular to H.S.H. Prince Albert II and the entire Princely Family.
