Happy National Cactus Day from the land of the cacti!
The cactus is the only plant with areoles—those small, fuzzy bumps on the exterior—from which flowers, spines, and branches spout. Each areole produces only one flower in its lifetime!
Cacti can live for decades as houseplants, and hundreds of years in the wild, and they grow at an excruciatingly slow rate. It takes 10 years for the massive saguaro cacti to reach one inch tall, according to the National Park Service, and they won't reach their full height of 45 or more feet for 200 years. There are about 20 genera with some 1200 species and many hybrids found in the world.
Cactus spines are not thorns, they are highly modified leaves. Cacti are Musical. At least their spines. The largest specimens were previously used as gramophone needles.
