On May 1, the Catholic Church begins the May Crownings. For centuries the Catholic Church has dedicated May to honor the Virgin Mary. The custom was born in ancient Greece. May was dedicated to Artemis, goddess of fertility. Something similar happened in ancient Rome as May was dedicated to Flora, the goddess of vegetation. At that time they celebrated the ludiflorals or floral games at the end of April and asked for her intercession.
