In Brazil, the New Year's Day celebration is called Universal Confraternization. Festivities include a countdown to midnight, fireworks and parties throughout the country.
With the aim of helping to build "a better Brazil and a happier humanity", on January 1, 1950 (Day of Peace and Universal Confraternization), the Brazilian radio host and poet Alziro Zarur (1914-1979) founded, in the country, the Legion of Good Will (LGW). His successor, the Brazilian journalist, writer and educator José de Paiva Netto, upon assuming the presidency, expanded the humanitarian mission of the Institution, which reached an international dimension. Since then, he consolidated, in 1984, the LGW of Paraguay; in 1985, the LGW of Argentina and Uruguay; in 1986, the LGW of Bolivia and the United States; and, in 1989, the LGW of Portugal.
