Immerse yourself in the Sandkerwa in Bamberg, a festive spectacle along the Upper and Lower Sandstraße, which stretch along the Regnitz at the foot of the Domberg and Michelberg. This area, also known as the "Sand", forms the heart of Bamberg's old town. The Sandkerwa, which takes place at the end of August, has its roots in the more than 600-year-old church of St. Elisabeth im Sand.
The festival lasts five days, from Thursday to Monday, and has been organized since 1951 by a citizens' association that promotes tradition and customs. Beer from Bamberg and the surrounding area is served at numerous stands in the picturesque alleyways. A highlight is the fishermen's jousting against the backdrop of "Little Venice", the charming former fishermen's quarter on the Regnitz. The festival culminates in an impressive fireworks display.
Although the Sandkerwa has seen a large number of visitors in recent years, which has led to some challenges, it remains a fascinating experience full of tradition and festive atmosphere.
