The salt and light festival in Bad Harzburg has a long tradition. As early as 1575, Duke Julius of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel sponsored a salt festival to celebrate the importance of salt mining for the region. After the closure of the salt works in 1849, the festival fell into oblivion. It was only revived in 1970 and has since developed into one of the most popular festivals in the Harz Mountains.
