International Drone Day is celebrated annually on the first Saturday of May. This international event brings together drone enthusiasts, pilots, and developers from all over the world. On this day, demonstrations, flight shows, workshops, and community meet‑ups take place to promote the use of drones in science, education, photography, rescue operations, and simply as a hobby.
History of the Day:
International Drone Day was established in 2014 by Sarah and David Oneal, creators of the web series That Drone Show.
The first celebration took place in 2015 in the United States, and since 2016 the date has been fixed as the first Saturday of May.
Goals and Objectives:
The organizers aimed to change the public perception of drones, which for a long time were associated mainly with military purposes. The holiday highlights peaceful and beneficial applications of unmanned aerial vehicles:
Agriculture — crop monitoring, spraying.
Rescue operations — locating missing people, delivering medicine.
Ecology — observing wildlife, monitoring natural disasters.
Education and entertainment — photography, video shooting, drone racing.
Motto
The slogan of the day is simple and clear: “Drones are good!”
