Major Dhyan Chand is known as Hockey Magician or The Wizard. His birthday is celebrated on 29 August as National Sports Day in India. His autobiography titled Goal was published in 1952. He died on 3 December 1979. He was a part of the Indian hockey team that won gold medals in three consecutive Summer Olympics, in 1928, 1932, and 1936. He began his hockey career with the British Indian Army's regimental squad. He was given the name Dhyan Chand because of his enthusiasm for the sport.
States like Haryana, Punjab and Karnataka, among others, organise various sporting events and seminars aimed at spreading awareness about the importance of physical activities and sports in life.
