The Day of Remembrance is an Italian national civil solemnity, celebrated on February 10 each year, commemorating the massacres of the foibe and the Julian-Dalmatian exodus. Established by Law No. 92 of March 30, 2004, it is intended to "preserve and renew the memory of the tragedy of the Italians and of all the victims of the foibe, of the exodus from their lands of the Istrians, Fiumans and Dalmatians after World War II, and of the more complex vicissitude of the eastern border."
The Day of Remembrance is associated with the issuance of a commemorative medal intended for the relatives of those suppressed and infoibe in Istria, Rijeka, Dalmatia or the provinces of the present eastern border between September 8, 1943, the date of the announcement of the entry into force of the Cassibile Armistice, and February 10, 1947, the day of the signing of the Paris Peace Treaties. Excluded from recognition are those who were killed while voluntarily part of formations not in the service of Italy.
The date chosen is the day on which, in 1947, the Treaty of Paris was signed, which assigned to Yugoslavia Istria, Kvarner, the city of Zadar with its province, and most of Venezia Giulia, previously part of Italy.
