The Sri Lankan Army was created on October 10, 1949. After a tour by the commander of the guard presented in honor of the anniversary, the official opening of the day's activities begins with the commander raising the army flag and singing the army song, giving the event a sense of patriotism and grandeur.
After a two-minute silence in memory of all fallen and missing War Heroes, the day culminates with a solemn procession with the regimental banners, after a colorfully dressed parade commander reports in accordance with military tradition.
This is followed by the commander's customary address to all troops in the Army, in which the commander is expected to appreciate the many developmental roles played by the Army in Sri Lanka.
