In India, Children’s Day was first observed in 1956. Children’s Day is celebrated to enhance awareness about the rights, education and development of children in the country. November 14 was selected as Children’s Day to pay tribute to Pandit Nehru, as was known for his fondness of children, who called him ‘Chacha Nehru’. Born in 1889, he was fondly called Chacha Nehru ("Uncle Nehru").
However, after the death of Pandit Nehru in 1964, it was decided that his birthday be celebrated as Children's Day. Along with being an able administrator, Nehru enforced the establishment of some of the most prominent educational institutions in India.
