Juan Santamaría Rodríguez (August 29, 1831 – April 11, 1856) was a drummer in the Costa Rican army, officially recognized as the national hero of his country for his actions in the 1856 Second Battle of Rivas, in the Filibuster War. Juan Santamaría was the last soldier to volunteer. According to the traditional account, on April 11, Salvadoran General José María Cañas suggested that one of the soldiers advance towards the hostel with a torch and set it on fire. As he forged forward to his mission, he was mortally wounded by enemy fire, however, this did not stop him. He was able to light the hostel on fire before he died.
