Trinidad and Tobago were ceded to Britain in 1802 under the Treaty of Amiens as separate states and unified in 1889. British rule led to an influx of settlers from the United Kingdom and the British colonies of the Eastern Caribbean. The King's Official Birthday (alternatively the Queen's Official Birthday when the monarch is female) is the selected day in the United Kingdom and most Commonwealth realms on which the birthday of the monarch is officially celebrated in those countries. The sovereign's birthday was first officially marked in the Kingdom of Great Britain in 1748, for King George II. Trinidad and Tobago obtained independence in 1962, becoming a republic in 1976.
The Constitution is the supreme law of Trinidad and Tobago and all other pieces of legislation must be in conformity with it. The fundamental human rights and freedoms of all citizens, adults and children, resident or alien within the jurisdiction of Trinidad and Tobago, are protected under the Constitution.
