It's a powerful antioxidant. Also called ascorbic acid, Vitamin C helps deactivate highly reactive molecules known as free radicals that cause damage to cells. It's immunity boosting. It's collagen forming. It heals wounds.
Vitamin C was discovered in 1912, isolated in 1928, and, in 1933, was the first vitamin to be chemically produced. It is on the World Health Organization's List of Essential Medicines.
In 1928, Albert Szent-Györgyi isolated a substance from adrenal glands that he called 'hexuronic acid'. Four years later, Charles Glen King isolated vitamin C in his laboratory and concluded that it was the same as 'hexuronic acid'. Norman Haworth deduced the chemical structure of vitamin C in 1933.
