The word “guitar” has Sanskrit roots. It's the world's second most popular instrument. Guitar music first exploded in the late 1800s. The oldest guitar-like instruments came from Egypt and Mesopotamia (about 3,500 years ago). The oldest image of a guitar-like instrument was found in Turkey.
Although steel-stringed acoustic guitars are now used all over the world, the person who is thought to have created the first of these guitars was a German immigrant to the United States named Christian Frederick Martin (1796-1867). Guitars at the time used so-called catgut strings created from the intestines of sheep.
The world's smallest guitar was made at Cornell University in New York. It is 10 micrometers long (1 micrometer is 1-millionth of a meter) with strings 50 nanometers (100 atoms) wide.
