Jacinto Lara was born on May 28, 1778 in the town of Carora in the then Viceroyalty of New Granada dependent on Spain, currently Lara State in Venezuela, the name of the state is named in his honor.
His parents were the Spaniard Miguel de Lara and the Venezuelan Juana Paula Meléndez. In his youth he dedicated himself to the cattle trade and, in the performance of these tasks, he became friends with José Tomás Boves, until the latter opted for the royalist side in the War of Independence. While he dedicated himself to commerce and agriculture, he managed to amass a small fortune that he later used to promote the independence cause.
