To celebrate this wonderful object, popular libraries across the country are participating in a social media campaign highlighting the importance of reading, today more than ever. It may be small and fragile, but there is no object as powerful for culture as the book. That is why "Book Day" is celebrated in Argentina on June 15 every year, while the rest of the world celebrates it on April 23.
The commemoration began in 1908. The National Council of Women awarded the prizes of its literary contest on that day and set up an annual celebration. In 1924, that Council succeeded in getting President Marcelo T. de Alvear to declare the date as "Book Festival".
Later, in 1941, at the request of a resolution of the Ministry of Education, the name was changed to "Book Day", which is still in use today.
