Canal 5 (formerly known as Televisión Nacional Uruguay) is the main public television channel in Uruguay, with its main studios located in Montevideo. Channel 5 of the Servicio Oficial de Difusión Radio Eléctrica (SODRE) was the first television channel authorized to broadcast in 1955, but due to bureaucratic issues it took eight years to be founded. It began broadcasting on an experimental basis only on February 28, 1963 and on a regular basis on June 19 of the same year. Its first director was Justino Zavala Carvalho, who promoted it.
