17 August - Flag Day in Guatemala
In 1871, during the government of General Miguel García Granados, the creation of the Guatemalan Flag was decreed, establishing that its colors were sky blue and white; and since 1961 the Flag Day is celebrated every August 17.
Throughout the history of Guatemala the flag has been modified until reaching the current design, which consists of two vertical stripes at each end of sky blue, representing strength, justice, truth and loyalty; in the middle a white stripe, representing purity, peace, integrity, firmness and light. In addition, in the center the Coat of Arms, where the Quetzal rests, representing the freedom and autonomy of Guatemalans.
