Virgin of Juquila Day in Mexico

Our Lady Immaculate Virgin of Juquila is a Marian Advocation of the Virgin Mary under the advocation of the Clean and Pure Conception, originally from the town of the same name. Her sanctuary is located in the city of Santa Catarina Juquila, in the state of Oaxaca, Mexico. His feast is celebrated on December 8 with typical music, traditional dances and colorful festivities.

What is known today as the community of Santa Catarina Juquila was founded in 1272. According to ancient texts, the first inhabitants came from the Mixtec region, who settled on the banks of a mighty river that provided them with the appropriate conditions for good development, beginning to populate what is now Juquila. In 1725, due to its religious-touristic importance, it was given the category of municipal seat and political district. According to anecdotes from grandparents and various stories, Juquila was a vassalage jurisdiction of Tututepec in 1526. With the arrival of Fray Jordán de Santa Catalina to the town of Amialtepec, who during his stay occupied the services of a humble peasant whom he educated religiously. When the time came for Fray Jordan to return to his place of origin and he had to pay the humble peasant, he gave him as a reward an image of the Immaculate Conception (which was carved in Spain), warning him that he had to venerate it as he had taught him, the image was placed in the hut of the humble peasant. It is said that one day the hut caught fire and was reduced to ashes, with the image showing only slight burns. Later, several miracles took place, of which the neighboring towns learned about, and that is how the inhabitants of Juquila organized themselves to move the image to their community. This is how the birth of a religious town began, until the construction of the sanctuary where this image continues to be venerated, carrying out its festivities and religious acts on December 8.
