Postage Stamp Day was first celebrated in the year 1935 (December) in Austria and is dedicated to highlight the importance of stamps in the postal service by post offices around the world and in exhibitions for the public, etc. In Germany, Postage Stamp Day was first celebrated on January 7, 1936, the birthday of Heinrich von Stephan.
In 1937 the International Federation of Philately (French: Fédération internationale de philatélie, FIP) announced January 7 as World Postage Stamp Day. However, since 1938 FIP members can create their own deadline for the celebration of Stamp Day.
