1 March - National Transportation Day and Railwaymen's Day in Argentina
Every March 1st, the National Transportation Day is celebrated in memory of Jorge Newbery, who made great contributions in the foundational times of transportation in Argentina.
Since that tragic but immortal March 1, 1914, Argentina has commemorated Transport Day. On that day, Jorge Alejandro Newbery died in Mendoza, a pioneer of national aviation, who was also an exemplary sportsman, public official, engineer and man linked to science. Therefore, this day was instituted for the remembrance of the activity of transporting.
Newbery was 38 years old and lost his life during a demonstration prior to crossing the Andes Mountain Range in the following month, when his plane crashed at Los Tamarindos airfield, as the current area of El Plumerillo in the district of Las Heras was known at that time.
Today is celebrated the Railwaymen's Day and also the day of the transfer of the English railroads to the Argentine State, which took place on March 1st, 1948, in front of a crowd that filled the Plaza de los Ingleses in front of Retiro Station to celebrate the nationalization of the railroads.
