In May every year, a strange fever is noticeable in Dresden. Anyone who spends time in the city is infected in no time at all. Fighting back is futile. There is no need to consult a doctor. Everyone can cure themselves. The medicine is simple and has been tried and tested for many years. It bears the well-known name: Dixieland.
The International Dixieland Festival is a multi-day series of Dixieland music events that has been held in Dresden every year in May since 1971. It was founded on the initiative of Karlheinz Drechsel, Joachim Schlese, Erich Knebel and others. The first festival took place on Whit Sunday 1971 with three Dixieland bands from the GDR and one each from Poland, the CSSR and Hungary. The Kulturpalast has been the festival's main venue since 1971.
The festival begins every year with Dixieland in Familie, an event at Dresden Zoo.
