Local associations, countrywomen, schools, music groups, orchestras, traditional costume groups, plattsnackers, craftsmen, thatchers, nature conservationists, vintage car owners, tractor clubs and others present their homeland and their skills with a great deal of love and voluntary commitment.
The unique Vier- und Marschlande landscape lies between the Elbe and Bille rivers in the south-east of Hamburg. Germany's largest vegetable and flower-growing region, characterized by long dykes, canals and farmhouses and half-timbered houses, is also the origin of the "German strawberry", which was first cultivated here on a large scale in 1693. It brought wealth to the Vierland horticulturalists and was soon nicknamed the "gold of the Vierlande". A reason for the Rieck Haus open-air museum to pay a fitting tribute to the strawberry in the form of a festival! Since 1999, the museum has organized the popular Strawberry Festival every year in June.
