Over the years, the Steinauer Puppenspieltage festival has become a permanent institution known for its high-quality performances. Puppet theater stages from all over Germany offer a festival with performances for children and adults in the basement of the town hall and at other venues.
Steinau an der Straße was chosen as the venue for the Puppetry Days in 1993 because the town of Steinau is well known for puppetry among both amateurs and experts. In the 1950s, Karl Magersuppe founded the puppet theater in the former stables of the castle. Steinau became known far beyond its borders through its cultural work both locally and in front of an international audience.
