In 2001, the Cultural Office of the City of Hanover adopted the Japanese tradition of celebrating the Cherry Blossom Festival in Hiroshima Grove during the cherry blossom season. Under blossoming cherry trees, associations and initiatives offer a varied cultural program with Japanese martial arts, calligraphy, origami, taiko demonstrations, music, culinary Japanese specialties, manga presentations and Japanese tea ceremonies. Special emphasis is placed on the picnic, which visitors bring themselves, as is traditional in Japan.
The Hiroshima Grove, also known as the Hiroshima Memorial Grove, in Hanover was created in 1987 in a park on the Eilenriede in the Bult district. It commemorates the 110,000 Japanese who died in Hiroshima during the atomic bombing on August 6, 1945. The grove was created as part of the city partnership between the capital of Lower Saxony, Hanover, and the Japanese city of Hiroshima.
