25 November - Freiberg Christmas Market
The Freiberg Christmas Market is a traditional Christmas market that has been taking place since 2012 as the first mining-themed Christmas market in the Ore Mountains under the motto “Original mining in the Ore Mountains”.
Opening times: The Christmas market runs from the Tuesday before the 1st Advent until December 22nd. Open daily from 10:00 to 20:00 (Fridays and Saturdays until 22:00, Sundays from 10:30).
Venue: The Christmas market takes place on the Obermarkt in the historic old town of Freiberg.
Children take part in the “tree lighting and pyramid pushing” together with Santa Claus, angels, the Silver City Queen and the Lord Mayor.
Program highlights: Giant stollen cutting - the festive giant stollen is cut, the proceeds of which are donated to a good cause. Mining parade for the Mettenschicht - a traditional mining parade by torchlight with the Historische Freiberger Berg- und Hüttenknappschaft and the Bergmusikkorps Saxonia Freiberg. The parade starts on the Schloßplatz and ends on the Obermarkt. Afterwards there is a mountain church service in the Petrikirche.
Further attractions: Over 90 lovingly designed wooden huts offer Erzgebirge specialties and products. The “Schmelzer”, for example, serves delicious Erzgebirge mulled wine. There is also the “Little Mine Workshop” for children and the ringing in of the Freiberg Christmas peace.
The Freiberg Christmas market is an atmospheric place to enjoy the Advent season and experience the traditions of the silver town of Freiberg.
