Pützchens Markt in Bonn is one of the oldest folk festivals in Germany and takes place every year on the second weekend in September. Its history dates back to the 14th century when, according to legend, the abbess Saint Adelheid plunged her crook into the ground and water began to gush out.
The festival developed into a place of pilgrimage and attracted traders, travelers, ballad singers, jugglers, animal tamers and artists. Today, more than a million people visit Pützchens Markt every year, which has been held on the market meadows of Pützchen since the 18th century. Highlights include numerous food stalls, bars, confectionery stands and a huge firework display as the grand finale.
