The Johannisfest in Eschwege is an annual folk festival that takes place in the town of Eschwege in the Werra-Meißner district of Hesse. It lasts a total of five days.
The St. John's Festival dates back to the Middle Ages. It was originally celebrated in honor of John the Baptist, who was born on 24 June. John the Baptist was a central figure in Christianity and is described in the New Testament as the forerunner of Jesus Christ. Over the centuries, the Feast of St. John has evolved.
Nowadays, the St. John's Festival in Eschwege is a popular event with concerts, parades, fairground rides and culinary stalls.
It is an opportunity for people to meet, celebrate and pay tribute to the town's history.
