The Cannstatter Wasen, also known as the Cannstatter Volksfest, is one of the largest and most important folk festivals in Germany. Every year in the fall, it attracts millions of visitors to Stuttgart. The festival was founded in 1818 by King Wilhelm I of Württemberg and his wife Katharina to celebrate the economic recovery after a severe famine.
Date: The Cannstatter Volksfest traditionally takes place from the end of September to the beginning of October and lasts around 17 days.
Events: Visitors can expect a variety of attractions at the folk festival. These include impressive rides, festive tents with live music and a wide range of culinary delights, including traditional specialties such as knuckle of pork, pretzels and, of course, beer.
Parade: A highlight is the traditional Volksfest parade, which parades through Stuttgart on the first Sunday of the festival. This parade includes colorful floats, historical costumes and festively decorated horse-drawn carriages.
Open-air concerts: During the festival, there are regular open-air concerts on the festival grounds. In the summer months, the Cannstatter Wasen is also transformed into a large concert arena where well-known artists perform.
Since its foundation, the Cannstatter Volksfest has developed continuously and is now an important cultural event that embodies almost 200 years of tradition. It not only offers entertainment for the whole family, but also a deep insight into Swabian culture and tradition.
