The Whitsun Festival Week in Bad Kötzting always takes place from Whitsun Saturday to the following weekend. The festival week starts on Saturday with the horse market on Amberg Island. The official opening of the Whitsun folk festival then follows in the afternoon. You can look forward to the festival tent until the final day. A special highlight is the Whitsun Ride on Whit Monday. The Whitsun procession in Bad Kötzting is one of the largest mounted processions in Europe and dates back to a vow made in 1412.
The Whitsun festival in Bad Kötzting is an event steeped in tradition, dating back to a vow made in 1412. It includes the famous Whitsun Ride, one of the largest mounted processions of supplication in Europe. On Whit Monday, over 900 riders ride from Bad Kötzting to Steinbühl on decorated horses, praying.
A highlight is the Tugendkränzchen, a filigree work of gold and silver wire that is worn during the ride. The festival week also offers a varied program, including church services, parades, concerts and the traditional Pfingstl-Spiel.
The event combines religious traditions with cultural celebrations and attracts numerous visitors every year.
