The Annaberg Kät is the largest folk festival in the Ore Mountains and is one of the oldest folk festivals in Germany. It takes place every year in Annaberg-Buchholz a fortnight after Whitsun and attracts several hundred thousand visitors.
History: The origins of the Kät date back to 1520. It was originally a pilgrimage to St. Trinitatis Church, which was later transformed into a Protestant festival of the dead during the Reformation. Over time, it developed into a fair, which eventually became a folk festival.
Highlights: The Kät offers a variety of attractions, including fairground rides, gastronomic offerings and cultural events. The fireworks and historical elements, which reflect the festival's long tradition, are particularly popular.
Special features: The name “Kät” is derived from the dialect pronunciation of the word “Dreieinigkeit” (Dreiaanigkät). The festival site, the so-called Kätplatz, offers enough space for the numerous showmen and visitors.
It is a festival that combines tradition and modernity and is known far beyond the region. Have you ever been there or are you planning to visit?
