The prayer and lighting of the Christmas tree in Orthodox churches heralds the birth of the Savior, whose coming is celebrated as the beginning of a new era and as the most joyful event for Christianity. This marked the beginning of the celebration of Christmas Eve, that is, the declared advent of Christmas.
Christmas Eve symbolizes the tree that, according to tradition, shepherds brought to Joseph and Mary to light a fire and warm the cave where Jesus was born. Christmas Eve is lit before the feast and burns until Christmas Day, when the joy of Christ's birth is proclaimed.
