Each day in the calendar was given a unique combination of a name and a number. In addition, both individual days and periods of days were given their own gods in the calendar, highlighting the Aztec view that time and daily life was inseparable from religious beliefs.
The holiday, also known as Yancuic Xihuitl, goes back to pre-Columbian times, but is still celebrated now by many people in Mexico and around the world. To celebrate this holiday, dancers wear colorful costumes to perform traditional dances to ceremonial music
To celebrate, ocote (pitch-pine) candles are lit on the eve of the new year, along with fireworks, drumming, and singing. Some of the most important events occur in Huauchinango, Naupan, Mexico City, Zongolica, and Xicotepec.
