Independence Day is one of the annual celebrations in the Philippines held on June 12 in commemoration of the Declaration of Independence of the Philippines from Spain on June 12, 1898. It is a National Day of celebration in the Philippines.
On July 4, 1946, the United States formally recognized Philippine independence. This marked the end of a long process that began in 1916, when the Jones Act promised that within a few years recognition would also recognize Philippine independence, and the Tydings-McDuffie Act of 1933 began a ten-year period of transition to prepare for independence.
