First country to be named after a woman. Saint Lucia is thought to have been a Sicilian saint who endured death in Syracuse, Sicily around 310 A.D. Every year on February 22, St Lucia celebrates Independence Day to commemorate the day in 1979 when Saint Lucia gained complete independence from Britain. The only country you'll find the Jacquot (St Lucia Parrot). It has the world's only drive-in volcano.
Saint Lucia and Ireland are the only two sovereign states in the world named after a woman (Ireland is named after the Celtic goddess of fertility Eire).
