25 August - National Whiskey Sour Day and National Banana Split Day in USA
While there’s no agreed on birthday for the Whiskey Sour, it’s acknowledged that its first printed recipe appeared in that famed tome of 19th-century cocktail wisdom, “How to Mix Drinks,” circa 1862.
The classic recipe for a Whiskey Sour has remained simple: with liquor, lemon, and simple syrup, the drink needs only three ingredients to be delicious. In the UK, the drink is often made with gin or brandy, but whiskey has been the liquor of choice in the States, giving it its official name as the whiskey sour.
The banana split was invented in 1904 at Strickler's Drug Store in Latrobe, Pennsylvania. It was originally sold to customers for 10 cents, which at the time was twice the price of other sundaes.
