This National Scientific Culture Day was created in 1996 in Portugal. The 24th of November was chosen for its celebration because it was on this day (in 1906) that Rómulo de Carvalho, the Physics and Chemistry professor responsible for promoting the teaching of science and scientific culture on national soil, was born. Rómulo de Carvalho was also a poet, under the pseudonym of António Gedeão.
On this day, activities are carried out in schools across the country, such as scientific experiments and group work, to be put on display later. Colloquiums and scientific dissemination sessions are also organized in the main cities of the country, so that the populations have more contact with the activities and professionals in the world of science.
Celebrating science and awakening interest in it are the main goals of this day.
