Tercios (Spanish tercio) was a tactical unit of the Spanish Empire during the Habsburg domination of European battles in the 16th century and the first half of the 17th century.
On January 31 is celebrated the Day of the Tercios (Día de los Tercios) in Spain. It commemorates that in 1578 the battle of Gembloux took place that proclaimed the Spanish armies victorious in the 80 Years' War. The Crown recovers the south of Flanders. Legend has it that the army of the States General was completely annihilated by the Spanish Tercios.
