Day of Education and Culture of Bulgaria, and Slavic Literature is a Bulgarian holiday, which is celebrated on May 24. On this day in Bulgaria celebrates Education and Culture of Bulgaria and the creation of the Glagolitic alphabet of Cyril and Methodius.
In the 9th century there were two Greek-Bulgarian missionary brothers named Cyril and Methodius (Kyril and Metodii in Bulgarian). Cyril was a great philologist and both he and Methodius had experience in diplomatic and Christianization missions in pagan lands.
Prince Ratislav I of Moravia commissioned both brothers to evangelize his territory in the Slavic language, and to carry out their mission Cyril and Methodius created the Glagolitic alphabet (the version prior to Cyrillic). Thus they were able to translate the Bible into Old Slavonic and begin to evangelize, first in Great Moravia and later in the rest of the Slavic countries.
