Born on the island of Pentecost, Walter Lini (1942-1999) studied for the Anglican priesthood in New Zealand. He became leader of the New Hebrides National Party (later Vanua'aku Pati) and his country's first prime minister on independence in 1980. He was re-elected in 1983.
